Inclusive Discovery at Explorium

Explorium welcomes everyone, from every corner of Ireland and beyond, creating an environment where science is accessible, engaging, and meaningful for all abilities and backgrounds. We are proud to have welcomed many ASD classes and families with additional needs, the Irish Wheelchair Association, Cork Deaf Association, Vision Sports Ireland, Down Syndrome community groups, and many others through our doors. We hope to open our arms even wider in the future.

We wanted to take this opportunity to share some of the services we offer to support our neurodiverse and additional needs communities.

Explorium for Everyone: Accessibility & Sensory Supports

  • Sensory Sessions

Periodically, Explorium hosts special evening events exclusively for the neurodivergent community, ensuring that the spaces are not too crowded for a successful visit. The lights will be lowered, the sounds will be turned down, and both Junior Explorium and the Science Centre will be available to explore.

Spaces will be limited, so book your tickets soon!

    Social Stories

Coming soon! We are in the process of creating a Social Story for each of the three zones: Junior, Science, and Climbing/Technology. Our hope is that this will help prepare people for what they will see when they arrive here and walk them through photographs of some of the experiences they may encounter.

    Registered Carers Visit Free

When attending with the person in your care, you can show your Carer ID for free entry into Explorium. We are delighted to be able to support our neurodiverse and additional needs communities in this way.

    Changing Places Facility Available

Our state-of-the-art accessible toilet on the Ground Floor is fitted with a toilet, sink, shower, and changing table with a hoist system, allowing people to move throughout the space safely.

    Still Learning…

Our team is constantly looking for ways to serve our communities better, and we welcome any feedback on how to make Explorium even more accessible to more people. Give us a try and then reach out to info@explorium.ie with your ideas!

Sensory Room

Comfort Comes First

" "

If at any time during your visit you find yourself in need of a quiet space, you can ask Explorium staff to show you to our Sensory Room on the Ground Floor.

The room is a large space with comfortable sofas to relax on, as well as three sensory pods with reduced lighting and sound, designed to help children focus in a contained, soft space.

The Sensory Room can host a maximum of eight people at one time and is a shared space for anyone who needs it. It is available Monday to Sunday from 10:00am–4:00pm.
