At Explorium, exploration and learning are creative, inclusive, informed, and safe. We are committed to creating a positive, fun, and secure environment where curiosity and learning can flourish.

Explorium is dedicated to protecting your personal information — and that of your family — when you use any of our services.

In addition, Explorium upholds the highest standards of child protection and welfare. Our Child Safeguarding Statement outlines our commitment to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all children and young people who engage with our programmes, exhibits, and experiences.

In order to give you the best experience possible Explorium sometimes collects information about you. We might do this in a number of different ways for different reasons.

We may ask you for information about yourself when you purchase tickets to the venue, events tickets or other products or services so that we can process payment and send you tickets and communications about those services.

If you register to receive e-newsletters or marketing communication from us we will contact you from time to time about upcoming events or new experiences and updates on our charity partners Mellon Educate.

If you contact Explorium, fill in a feedback form or ask for more information on part of our services, we may also keep a record of your correspondence.

Explorium will not disclose any of your personal information except when you have requested it or we have stated otherwise and have your consent to do so. Explorium will not share your information with a third party without explicit consent except in instances required or permitted to by law.

Explorium may employ the services of third party data processors subject to adequate data security and data protection standards being met. These processors are obliged under the Data Protection Act to protect your data and may be criminally prosecuted should they breach the terms of their agreement with Explorium or fail to meet their legal and regulatory obligations.

Administrative purposes
If you are buying tickets or using services from Explorium we may ask you for personal information such as name, age, date of birth, address, telephone number or mobile number as part of the process. The information you give us about yourself will mean that we can process these requests and enquiries. We may store this information to serve as a record and we might contact you to give you updates about those services or experiences.

Research and analysis
We want to be sure that we are making life-changing experiences for everyone. To monitor this we carry out geo-demographic analysis. This analysis is used to make decisions on how we develop our services for the people who have a relationship with us and those who don’t and to make sure our community are getting the best from us. When using personal information in this way we will anonymise the information before it is processed, so that no individuals can be identified.

We will hold your personal information on our systems for as long as is necessary for the relevant activity, or as long as is set out in any relevant contract with Explorium.

If you have not been active in the last three years then your account or contact details may be classed as dormant or may be deleted in line with this privacy policy. We will email to remind you before deletion so please check your inbox regularly to see if we have sent you any emails about this.

If you have consented to receive information about events, experiences, marketing information or want to feedback how we might improve Explorium we will contact you.

If this is not the case you will not receive any marketing communications or updates. We will only contact you for administrative purpose (as set out above).

You may change any or all of your information by contacting us on info@explorium.ie .You have the right to request a copy of the information that we hold about you. You may also request that we delete any information we hold about you at any time. Please contact us and we will comply with this request subject to our legal obligations.

If you have opted to receive information about Explorium by email which you no longer want to receive look for the unsubscribe link to opt out which will be on all communications.

Explorium Child Safeguarding Statement

Explorium is a science and Sport centre dedicated to inspiring curiosity, fostering creativity, promoting learning, and supporting our community.

Explorium provides a range of educational and recreational experiences to children and families across Ireland and beyond. Our staff and volunteers engage with children at varying levels through hands-on learning, interactive exhibits, workshops, and events.

Activities include:

  • Formal education programmes delivered in classrooms, laboratories, and throughout our interactive science zones.
  • School tours and workshops offering access to interactive exhibits, science shows, and guided learning experiences for primary and secondary school students.
  • Public science events and demonstrations facilitated by Explorium educators, STEM specialists, and event teams.
  • Outreach activities, including off-site presentations and educational expositions.
  • Private events, such as birthday parties, family celebrations, and corporate functions.
  • Employment and work experience opportunities for young people across various roles within Explorium.

 

Our Commitment

Explorium is committed to creating a safe, inclusive, and positive environment where all children are protected from harm.

We agree that:

  • The protection and welfare of children are of paramount importance.
  • We will fully comply with our obligations under Children First: National Guidance for the Protection and Welfare of Children (2017), the Tusla Child Safeguarding: A Guide for Policy, Procedure and Practice (2017), the Children First Act 2015, and all other relevant legislation.
  • We will cooperate fully with statutory authorities in matters relating to child protection and welfare.
  • We will promote safe practices to prevent harm to children and protect our staff from unnecessary risk or false allegations.
  • We will ensure confidentiality is maintained in all child protection matters.

 

Our Safeguarding Approach

Explorium believes that child safety and welfare are everyone’s responsibility. Our goal is to ensure that every educational and recreational interaction places the best interests of the child at the centre of our operations.

To achieve this, Explorium implements the following:

  • Comprehensive recruitment and vetting of all staff and work experience students, including Garda vetting where applicable.
  • Detailed training and induction programmes for all staff and volunteers.
  • A robust Child Safeguarding Policy and Code of Conduct for all staff interacting with children.
  • Comprehensive Health & Safety policies and risk assessments for all exhibits, workshops, and events.
  • A detailed Lost Child Policy and clear reporting procedures to ensure swift reunification and minimise distress.

 

Risk Assessment

Under the Children First Act 2015, Explorium has assessed potential risks of harm to children while availing of our services.
For the purpose of this statement, “harm” includes assault, ill-treatment, neglect, or sexual abuse that seriously affects or is likely to seriously affect a child’s health, development, or welfare.

Procedure in Place to Manage Risk

1. Harm between children in interactive zones, play areas, or exhibits where parents/guardians may not have constant supervision.

– Parents/guardians are reminded of their responsibility to supervise children at all times.
– Staff provide support and supervision but do not replace parental oversight.
– Procedures in place to manage and report incidents or allegations of abuse between visitors.

2. Risk of harm from staff or work experience students.

– Implementation of Explorium’s Child Protection Policy aligned with Children First requirements.
– Rigorous recruitment and vetting procedures.
– Mandatory child protection training for all staff and volunteers.
– Appointment of a Designated Liaison Person (DLP) for child protection matters.
– Maintenance of appropriate staff-to-child ratios during educational activities.
– Clear code of behaviour and reporting procedures for staff.

3. Lost child potentially at risk from others.

– Implementation of a detailed Lost Child Policy including identification and tracking protocols.
– Requirement for at least two staff members to assist a lost child at any time.
– Staff trained in effective management of lost child situations.
– Use of CCTV and on-site security personnel to assist in such cases.
– Parents reminded of supervision responsibilities.

Procedures

Explorium’s Child Safeguarding Statement is developed in accordance with:

  • Children First Act 2015
  • Children First: National Guidance for the Protection and Welfare of Children (2017)
  • Tusla’s Child Safeguarding: A Guide for Policy, Procedure and Practice (2017)

Supporting procedures include:

  • Procedure for managing allegations of abuse or misconduct against staff, volunteers, or work experience students.
  • Procedure for safe recruitment and selection of all individuals working with children.
  • Procedure for child safeguarding training, including identification and response to potential harm.
  • Procedure for reporting concerns about child protection or welfare to Tusla.
  • Maintenance of a list of mandated persons as required under legislation.
  • Procedure for appointing a Designated Liaison Person (DLP) for child protection matters.

Explorium recognises that safeguarding implementation is an ongoing process. We are committed to regularly reviewing and improving our practices to ensure children’s safety at all times.
