We wanted to take this opportunity to share some of the services we offer to support our neurodiverse and additional needs communities.
Explorium welcomes everyone, from every corner of Ireland and beyond, creating an environment where science is accessible, engaging, and meaningful for all abilities and backgrounds. We are proud to have hosted a multitude of school tours for children with additional needs, the Irish Wheelchair Association, Cork Deaf Association, Vision Sports Ireland, Down Syndrome community groups, and many others through our doors in our opening year and we hope to open our arms even wider in the future.
We wanted to take this opportunity to share some of the services we offer to support our neurodiverse and additional needs communities.
If at any time during your visit you find yourself in need of a quiet space, you can ask Explorium staff to show you to our Sensory Room on the Ground Floor. The room is a large space with comfortable sofas to relax on, as well as 3 sensory pods with reduced lighting and sounds, designed for children to be able to focus in a contained soft space.
You can also pre-reserve space at a specific time in the room for before or after your visit. This is a shared space, open to whomever needs it.
Our state-of-the-art Accessible Toilet on the Ground Floor is fitted with a toilet, sink, shower, and table with a hoist system allowing people to travel throughout the space safely.
Periodically, Explorium hosts special events that are exclusively for the neurodivergent community, ensuring that the spaces are not too crowded for a successful visit.
The lights will be lowered, the sounds will be turned down, and both Junior Explorium and the Science Centre will be available to explore. We have also invited a special yoga instructor to host sessions during the event. Space will be limited, so book your tickets soon!
We offer the people who support our neurodiverse and additional needs communities free admission to Explorium.
We are in the process of building a new website and plan to include a Social Story for each of the 3 Zones; Junior, Science, and Climbing/Technology. Our hope is that this will help prepare people for what they will see when they arrive here and walk them through the experiences they may encounter.
Our team is constantly looking to serve our communities better and we welcome any feedback on how to make Explorium even more accessible to more people. Give us a try and then reach out to info@explorium.ie with your ideas!
